If Mad Max has taught us anything about postapocalyptic journeys, it’s that they don’t really end. Sure, you can eventually decide you’re done roaming, but unless you have access to an interstellar spacecraft, you’re not really going to reach the end of the wasteland. It just goes on and on, stretching from one end of the earth to the other, and bringing with it stranger and deadlier horrors as it does.

Such is the case in this week’s Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2, the second chapter in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s frightening Black Label miniseries. In the last issue, Bruce awoke in a hospital and was told that his life as Batman was entirely in his head, a figment of his imagination. However, he also seemed to discover that the hospital was a charade orchestrated by Alfred, who was significantly older than Bruce remembered him being. All this was followed by Bruce awaking in a postapocalyptic desert with only a talking Joker head in a lantern for company.

In other words, your guess is as good as ours about what’s really going on here. Is Bruce losing his mind? Under the influence of some freaky new Scarecrow toxin? Or has the world really gone to hell and Bruce slept through the entire thing? And speaking of Scarecrow, if the cover of this issue is any indication, he’s likely on his way, along with Bane and god only knows what else. If our exclusive preview of this new chapter is any indication, it could be just about anything. All we can do is wait and hope the perpetually prepared Dark Knight has a plan for the end of the world.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and FCO Plascencia is in stores Wednesday.
