With so much excitement coming out of New York Comic Con every year, it can be a head-spinning chore to keep track of all the announcements. With its positioning in October, NYCC is often the venue where fans can get their first look at the new titles planned for the coming year, and DC always shows up to impress. So, we got our press badge ready to attend all of DC’s NYCC publishing panels to cover the exclusive new title drops and gather them all here for those of you who couldn’t make it. Straight from the Javits Center, here are the newly announced titles you can expect from DC in 2027.
DC BLACK LABEL/VERTIGO PANEL
Green Lantern: Dying of the Light
Jason Aaron, Tirso
The first new title announced on Thursday’s jam-packed panel covering DC’s two mature imprints is one that Absolute Superman’s Jason Aaron pitched to Friday’s convention attendees as “Hal Jordan's Dark Knight Returns.” Set twenty years in the future, we find Hal incarcerated in an intergalactic prison…until he gains access to a depowered ring with very limited construct abilities. Aaron teased us that many Lanterns you know will appear, and possibly a Hawk or two—as Aaron pointed out, every DC project he has written up to this point has featured a Thanagarian Hawkperson in some capacity as his lucky charm.
Joker/Harley: Malicious Intent
Kami Garcia, Mico Suayan, Cat Staggs, Jason Badower
You can call this one less of a new title drop and more of a resurrection. This sequel to DC Black Label’s Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity finds criminal profiler Harley Quinn where the last series left her off, but Malicious Intent is designed so that a reader can experience this follow-up on its own. Along with more Harley and Joker, we can expect Black Canary, Selina Kyle and lavish black-and-white flashbacks along for this ride.
DC Black Label Presents
One of the most interesting comic announcements this year was a new anthology series of standalone 48-page stories from DC Black Label breaking from the imprint’s traditional miniseries format for more focused stories driven by writer/artist talent and the characters they most want to tell a story with. Editor Chris Conroy promised us, to the laughter of the audience, that Batman would be staying out of the headlines on this one. The first three issues announced can be expected to cover:
- Zatanna, by Terry and Rachel Dodson. Inspired by their previous work on Zatanna comic covers, Terry joked this story is tentatively subtitled "Rabbit Season."
- Poison Ivy, by Amy Reeder. Reeder told us this is the story she's wanted to tell with Poison Ivy for years, and DC Black Label Presents is the vehicle she finally has to tell it.
- OMAC, by Denys Cowan and Ho Che Anderson. This tribute to Jack Kirby goes back to the original Buddy Blank incarnation of the character, as the legendary Cowan himself revisits the work of his own hero who got him into comics in the first place.
Hide Nor Hair
Adam Smith, Bob Quinn
As the panel switched over from Black Label to Vertigo, we got our first look at this fresh title making up half of the ashcan sample that attendees took home. Hide Nor Hair is the latest note in a leitmotif of supernatural noir-themed concepts in this new wave of Vertigo books following thrillers like The Brutal Dark and The Raven Conspiracy. This newest title stars Mallory, a 1950s makeup and special effects artist whose horror masks come alive and speak to her.
100 Bullets: Enemigos
Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso
Editor Chris Conroy broke what seemed to be a small bit of bad news to us at this point before dropping some much better news. It turns out the currently in-progress 100 Bullets: The US of Anger will be getting cut down from eight issues to seven…but technically, we can think of this order cut as an extension. Instead of that last issue, fans of the sweeping DC Vertigo crime epic are getting a totally new seven-issue miniseries, further following the few surviving characters of the original 100 Bullets. The chamber’s not quite empty just yet.
Dreambound/Fanatic
"Sadie Wilson-Finley," Ted Brandt, Ro Stein; Grace Ellis, Hannah Templer,
Much to our collective surprise, the last of the newly announced DC Vertigo titles was one that has secretly been in publication in weekly installments for more than a month…digitally, over on the WEBTOON platform. It was here that we learned that the romantic fantasy webcomic Dreambound by Ted Brandt, Ro Stein and enigmatic author “Sadie Wilson-Finley” was in fact one half of an ambitious double act with another previously announced Vertigo comic: the sister title Fanatic by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer, following one obsessive fan’s orbit into the life of Dreambound author Sadie, as both titles begin to influence each other. It was announced here that Dreambound will soon be adapted into print, a preview of which formed the other half of our takeaway ashcan issue.
DC ABSOLUTE PANEL
Absolute Justice
Jason Aaron, Juan Ferreyra
A quick confession: with a huge line practically wrapping across the entire fourth floor of the Javits Center North building, the DC Absolute panel was in such high demand that even DC.com wasn’t able to get in—we had to hear about this one after the fact. As we later learned, only one new title was announced during the panel, but it’s a doozy.
Absolute Justice finally brings the Absolute heroes together for a five-issue special event limited series, as the Absolute Universe’s Martian Manhunter calls upon Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern Jo Mullein for a very special case. Crucially, and in respect to the creative-vision-first approach that has made the Absolute titles such a success, this miniseries will feature no tie-ins or interrupt any of the ongoing titles themselves—leaving their respective teams free to continue cooking up their stories for you.
DC NEXT LEVEL PANEL
The Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground
Steve Foxe, Ricardo Federici
The DC Next Level panel on Saturday opened with the reveal of this new gorgeous-looking Swamp Thing series with an announcement from Joshua Williamson, one of the DC All In architects, showcasing some early black-and-white work for the upcoming comic by writer Steve Foxe and artist Ricardo Federici. All we can say so far about this one based on Williamson’s early tease—as well as the “The” in the title—is that this work seems to be influenced by where Ram V and Mike Perkins took their Swamp Thing in 2022. We’ll have to wait until next year to learn more.
Starfire
Alyssa Wong, Belen Ortega
After revealing some details about a few previously announced 2027 books like Vixen and Static, the audience got another treat. Starfire fans have longed for a new solo series for the beloved Titan and Tamaranean, and Wong and Ortega are primed to deliver. Described on the panel as "Red Sonja meets One Piece," we follow Starfire back to a Tamaran under siege. Wong confessed that Blackfire is one of her favorite DC characters, so expect to see plenty of sisterly drama.
Superboy-Prime Special
Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora
The Next Level panel concluded with Williamson stating his intention to continue on Superman for the foreseeable future, even as he continues developing Legion of Super-Heroes, with the reveal of this one-shot focused on Superboy-Prime, who was featured in Superman during Clark’s post-DC K.O. absence. Williamson told us that his mission statement was to give the comics-savvy and former Crisis-driving Superboy-Prime his own redemption story. Through outpouring support for his vision of the character from Superman fans, he feels as if Prime has earned his place in our hearts…which means it’s time to team up with Dan Mora once more for a special that will send him back home.
JIM LEE AND FRIENDS PANEL
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 3
Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce
The last new title announcement for the convention was one DC publisher Jim Lee dropped almost casually at his closed-door, no-phones-allowed “Jim Lee and Friends” panel. Teaming up once more with Legendary Comics, Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 3 was described by Jim Lee as the "third act" in their collaboration. Coming from the same creative team that brought us the first two Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong books, part three will spotlight the villainous alternate universe Crime Syndicate, bringing their own monstrous titans from twisted universes to invade Earth.
As part of the announcement, we got an early look at concept art for a yet-unnamed giant bat kaiju created for this series, based loosely on the background of the Super Friends' size-shifting Apache Chief. Lee stated this new character was built on parallels between US history and Godzilla's own origin of nuclear testing sites, going back to nuclear tests in the 20th century on historic Apache land.
All of this has been just a taste of what 2027 has in store for us—but no press release can match the thrill of being among the crowd in the room, listening to the reaction to each new title reveal. Hearing that pop of the crowd is the strongest reminder of who all of these comics are really for, so hopefully you can join us at one of the conventions we’ll be attending next year and experience it yourself!
