You know the drill! It’s the Summer of Supergirl with Milly Alock taking to the stars in the upcoming Supergirl. I know what you’re thinking. June 26 can't get here fast enough. Believe me, all of us here at DC.com feel the same way, so to help, we have a diversity of Supergirl articles in store for you over the next month…and this is one of them!
For the most part, Supergirl fans are used to seeing our girl Kara fly solo or alongside the other members of the Super-Family (we see you David Corenswet Supergirl cameo!). But with her star on the rise, maybe it’s time to change that. Here are seven Supergirl team ups we need to see ASAP. I’d love to see a limited series starring the Girl of Steel and any of these iconic DC characters!
Supergirl x Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn
One of my favorite limited series featuring an unexpected duo is 2015’s Harley Quinn and Power Girl. With some amnesia and finessing, Harley Quinn managed to convince Power Girl to team up with her and form a crimefighting duo. It’s a comic that has stuck with me for over a decade, and I yearn for more of that dynamic! Power Girl is technically a version of Kara Zor-El, so I'd love to see her Earth-0 iteration team up with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy for some bad-girl shenanigans.
A decade later, Harlivy have solidified their relationship and place within the DC Universe, so it would be interesting to see how they’d collectively team up with Kara. I think Harley and Ivy would offer non-judgmental support for some of Kara’s darker urges and feelings, contrasting how Clark misunderstands Kara at times. Also, a Kryptonian paired with Ivy’s plant-powers? Unstoppable!
Supergirl x Batgirl
Supergirl and Batgirl’s relationship has been explored, albeit briefly, in the comics and in various animations over the years, including Batman: The Animated Series. It's no secret they make a good pair—just look at Supergirl’s Rebirth run. We’ve had plenty of comics focusing on the partnership of Superman and Batman, so how about we mix things up with a limited series focusing on Kara and Babs? Not only would this give us a younger and more grounded approach to the Kryptonian/Bat relationship dynamic, but it would be fascinating to see Kara take on the darker role in this duo, with Babs being the more positive personality in the mix. Additionally, they’d be able to bond over being younger heroes trying to live up to the pressure of their older counterparts, the Man of Steel and the Caped Crusader!
Live-Action Supergirl x Live-Action Guy Gardner
If you didn’t know, Supergirl was a Red Lantern in her New 52 series. So, of course that means she crossed paths with Guy Gardner when he was a Red. Their dynamic was, surprisingly, a little wholesome. New 52 Kara felt that she could safely express her anger and be taken seriously when in the presence of her fellow Lanterns, and Guy was the one she connected with the most. Guy, in contrast to Clark, took on the role of cool uncle.
Now that Kara and Guy both have live-action counterparts, with Nathon Fillion as the latter, we need to see that team up! Their live-action iterations are a bit more wild, and with the new Lanterns show dropping this August on HBO Max, the door is slightly ajar for a Supergirl x Guy Gardner Red Lantern storyline. Okay, fine, we probably won’t be seeing anything like that very soon, but one can dream!
Supergirl x Red Hood
If we aren’t able to see Supergirl return to her angry ways in live action, maybe we can get it in the comics…and I know the perfect team up for it! We all know Jason Todd is objectively the angriest member of the Bat-Fam, and Supergirl is angry enough to earn a Red Lantern ring. So, with rage being such a common factor, I think they’d bond over struggling to fit in. We have seen them interact before, and even briefly team up in Supergirl’s New 52 series. We need them paired up again ASAP! I think they would be both a good and bad influence on each other in all the best ways, with each encouraging the other to get into some shenanigans while riffing on each other’s humor. It just makes too much sense!
Supergirl x Dreamer
This one has technically already happened…on The CW. Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, was an original character created for the CW Supergirl show in 2018 and the first transgender superhero on TV. Nicole Maines originated the role and has gone on to write several Dreamer comics for DC in the years since. The character has grown so much through these comics, taking on more responsibilities while embarking on a series of darker storylines. It’s similar, in many ways, to Supergirl's trajectory in recent years.
Kara and Nia need a proper reunion—one where they can bond as badass alien girls! Supergirl stories have often explored her relationship with the universe beyond simply Earth. I’d love to see a Supergirl/Dreamer story set in space! It would be great to see their mainline versions interact for a more mature run, but I imagine Sophie Campbell’s Supergirl would pair equally well with Bad Dream’s Dreamer. And just imagine all the Jon Kent gossip we’d get between the pair of them!
Supergirl x John Constantine
An unlikely duo, amiright? While Kara and Constantine have met before, we need more! Constantine's big personality paired with the fact that magic is one of the few Kryptonian weaknesses would create a fascinating dynamic with plenty of witty banter. And listen, I think they can both bring some snark to the table.
Recently we saw a brief team up between these two in DC's Kal-El-Fornia Love summer anthology. It was great, but that story was a bit more lighthearted. I’d love to see them in a darker DC Black Label series where they aren't afraid to explore their trauma. I’m picturing an older Supergirl in her 20s, so Kara and Constantine can kick butt, get into trouble and enjoy a drink or two! Supergirl traversing hell with Constantine as her guide? I’d pay big dollars to see that!
Supergirl x Jo Mullein
As previously mentioned, Supergirl has a healthy relationship with the universe beyond Earth. Jo Mullein, created by sci-fi novelist N.K. Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell for their series Far Sector, is one of the newest Green Lanterns to join the DC Universe. Far Sector has a similar backdrop and tone to Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, especially with the themes of isolation and racial intolerance found in both stories. It’s not all that surprising that there are many parallels between Jo and Kara’s hero journeys. So far, they have not met in the comics, but I’d love to see them become friends in a team up that takes place off-planet. I wouldn’t trust any other duo to bring justice to the universe as much as these two. Plus, I think they’d have some fun!
Supergirl is a multi-faceted character that changes when in the hands of different creative teams. There are so many ways she works with, and foils, an array of DC characters. The possibilities are endless! What Supergirl team-ups would you most like to see?
