Of all of Bruce Wayne’s friends and allies, none are more important than his loyal butler. After the tragic death of his parents, it was Alfred who raised the young “master Bruce,” before going on to become his most trusted adviser  in the Batman’s mission to protect the streets of Gotham. Today, we received our first look at actor Sean Pertwee (Elementary, Camelot) in this crucial Gotham role.

The photo was released via the official Gotham Tumblr, and it’s worth noting that this take on the beloved Alfred Pennyworth is slightly different than the tuxedo-clad butler we may have seen in other Batman comics, movies and shows. Gotham’s Alfred is a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London who has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.

The Gotham pilot is executive-produced by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) and Danny Cannon (CSI series, Nikita, The Tomorrow People). Cannon is directing the pilot episode from a script by Heller.

Based upon characters published by DC Entertainment, Gotham is from Warner Bros. Television. The project has a series commitment at FOX.
