Announced yesterday, and now available to read for free on DC UNIVERSE INFINITE over the next thirty days, The Flash/Fantastic Four is no ordinary webcomic. Published as a part of DC GO!, it marks the second announced DC/Marvel crossover of recent years after Batman’s in-progress crossover with Deadpool, and it’s one of the first to be published as a vertical scroll webcomic. (There’s also a Marvel counterpart, Thor/Shazam!, which was also published yesterday on Marvel Infinity.)

Considering all of the places Barry Allen has been and all the people he’s met since his Silver Age debut, it was only a matter of time until he crossed paths with Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing. But how did they all find themselves matching wits Gorilla Grodd? We spoke with writer Jeremy Adams about the ins, outs, ups and downs of this Flashy and Fantastic new one-shot.

What intrigued you about a team-up between The Flash and Fantastic Four, specifically?

The idea that these characters get to share the page is the most intriguing thing about the project. I love the Flash, and I love the Fantastic Four. To even get the opportunity to combine them in a small way was just too good of a chance to pass up.

Why did you decide on the Speed Force as the mechanic for this webcomic, and how did it impact the direction you took the story in?

The Speed Force is an all-purpose McGuffin that you can bend and use to your storyteller's heart's content! And because this is a scrolling comic, I just thought this would be a fun way to show our heroes blowing through various dimensions and seeing familiar faces.

We can’t ignore Gorilla Grodd! What made him the right villain for this story?

I sent a few pitches in, but I think that what people responded to is the classic giant ape on top of a tall building—the skyscraper happening to be the Baxter building only heightens the fun of it all. There's also the aspect that Grodd, Barry and Reed share a level of intellectual prowess that is fun to play with.

What did this crossover enable you to do with The Flash as a character that perhaps you didn’t have a chance to do during your run on his book?

I've written a lot with Wally, so any chance I get to run around with Barry is fun. He looks at things so differently, logically, critically. A detective with superpowers! So, it's fun to see how he approaches the situation with such a large scientific mind, versus by the seat of his pants like some other speedsters do.

Tell me a little about working with artist Adrián Gutiérrez. What did he bring to this story?

I think the first thing we saw was the cover and I lost my mind over it. I'm always in awe when an artist can read my scribblings and make sense of it, and Adrián didn't just make sense of it, he made it SOOOOO much better than I could imagine.

This is likely a comic that most DC and Marvel fans never thought would happen. What are you most excited for readers to see?

I think just having these characters occupy the same space is a joy whether the story is short or long. The art is just incredible, and I'm lucky they let me dig through the toybox to play with all the characters!
