It must be fate.

Black Adam, the upcoming DC movie starring Dwayne Johnson as the legendary antihero, has pulled off a magical bit of casting when it comes to the masked and mysterious Doctor Fate. THR announced today that Pierce Brosnan will be taking on the role of Kent Nelson in the soon-to-start-filming superhero epic that along with introducing Black Adam will also bring the Justice Society to the big screen for the first time.

Kent Nelson wears the powerful Helmet of Fate—an instrument imbued with the power of Nabu, one of the mythical Lords of Order. With the helmet, Doctor Fate ranks among the most powerful magic users in the DC Universe, with a history the stems all the way back to ancient Egypt. In Black Adam, Doctor Fate will be a part of the Justice Society, a team that also includes Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.

Brosnan is likely known first and foremost for his role as James Bond, which he embodied from 1995 to 2002 before handing it off to Daniel Craig. Over his storied career, he’s also made notable appearances in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, The Thomas Crown Affair and Mamma Mia! and on the small screen in the popular ’80s-era drama, Remington Steele. Doctor Fate will mark his first comic book superhero role, however.

Black Adam is scheduled to begin production next month, though plot details on the film remain thin. We know that it’s set within the DCEU and is tied closely to 2019’s Shazam!, which teased Adam’s origin as the first to wield the power of Shazam. It’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently worked with Johnson on Jungle Cruise and is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions and Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. The character of Doctor Fate was announced as being a part of Black Adam during the movie’s panel at DC FanDome last summer, where Johnson also unveiled the movie’s first teaser—a dynamic motion comic featuring the art of BossLogic.
