David S. Goyer has played a major role in shaping how today’s audiences see Batman. Now, the popular film and TV writer, producer and director wants to shape how we hear him as well.

DC, Warner Bros. and Spotify announced today that Goyer will executive produce Batman Unburied, an all-new original narrative podcast that marks the first project to come from the companies’ previously announced agreement to produce and distribute a slate of narrative podcasts featuring DC Super Heroes and Villains. Goyer originated the story for the series and will shepherd the project in his role as executive producer. Spotify will serve as the exclusive platform for Batman Unburied, which is expected to debut in 2021.

Plot details for Batman Unburied are being kept under wraps, but the series will explore the dark aspects of Bruce Wayne’s psychology, something that Goyer already has plenty of experience with. Among DC fans, Goyer is probably best known for his writing contributions on Christoper Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, as well as for scripting Man of Steel and co-writing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He also developed and executive produced Krypton for SYFY and Constantine for NBC, along with the animated Constantine: City of Demons for CW Seed. Currently, Goyer is executive producing the upcoming live action series based on Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman for Netflix and Warner Bros. (Coincidentally, The Sandman also recently inspired an audio production available through Audible, though Goyer had no involvement with it.)

“I’ve been a fan of narrative podcasts for some time and was looking for the right story—returning to Batman seems like the perfect opportunity,” said Goyer. “We’ll be using the unique advantages of audio to dig into the more nightmarish members of the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery.”

“David Goyer is an exceptional talent, and we can think of no better leader to leverage the infinite possibilities of podcasting to bring the nearly three hundred million Spotify users around the world a Batman saga for the ages,” shared Dawn Ostroff, Spotify’s Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer.

While Batman doesn’t have the audio legacy that Superman does, he isn’t new to this unique form of entertainment. The Dark Knight made appearances on the Man of Steel’s iconic radio show, The Adventures of Superman, both as a guest star and as an occasional solo star (to allow Superman voice actor Bud Collyer to take some time off). He also was the focus of two BBC audio dramas produced by The Sandman’s Dirk Maggs, 1989’s Batman: The Lazarus Syndrome and 1994’s Batman: Knightfall. Batman Unburied will be the Dark Knight’s first audio adventure of the 21st Century.

Batman Unburied will be developed and produced by Goyer’s Phantom Four production company in association with Warner Bros.’ Blue Ribbon Content. Phantom Four’s Keith Levine will also serve as an executive producer alongside Goyer.
