The heroes may change, but the Justice League is forever. That’s how it goes, right? So, no matter how far into the future we may find ourselves, there will always be a team of remarkable people gifted with different superpowers who protect the world from threats far too great for any one hero to tackle alone.

It’s a comforting thought, but a false one. At least, it is if the latest iteration of the Legion of Doom has anything to do with it. In next week’s Future State: Justice League #1, the Justice League’s most powerful adversaries collectively scheme to bring an end to the storied team once and for all. Now true, we’ve seen this dance before. The Legion is always determined to destroy the League, and so far, our heroes have made it through every attempt with their gallant smiles and impressive hair intact. But this Justice League is different. Trust is still in short supply and teamwork is a work in progress. While the League of our time is made up of the best of friends, this Justice League doesn’t even know each other’s true names.

So, when some noteworthy people turn up dead and all evidence points to the Justice League, things don’t exactly go smoothly for Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, the Flash and Aquawoman, who can’t exactly vouch for each other. Yowza! Let’s hope they can put aside their fears and mistrust and find some way to truly come together, otherwise the future may be over really quickly for the heroes of the Justice League…and for the rest of us.

Future State: Justice League #1, featuring a Justice League story by Joshua Williamson, Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques and Romulo Fajardo Jr., is in stores and available digitally on Tuesday, January 12.
