Yes, “The Joker War” is still raging in the city of Gotham, but let’s not forget that the Clown Prince of Crime isn’t the only villain on these streets. When last we left the Dark Knight, he had been poisoned and seemingly blown off the side of a building by one of his own bat-planes. Or rather, one of the bat-planes he used to own. After months of careful planning, the Joker is now in possession of all of Bruce Wayne’s assets, including the ones that are known publicly—like Wayne Enterprises and Wayne Manor—and all of the ones hidden away in safe houses and Batcaves. That means the Joker is now one of the wealthiest men in the world…and arguably the most dangerous.

And yet, at the start of next week’s Batman #96, the Joker’s assault seems to be long over and it’s not the Clown Prince that Batman is battling, but Mr. Freeze and his family.

That’s right, family.

In what seems to be a flash forward or a glimpse at a possible future, the Fries family has expanded to include two equally cold sons, both of whom seem to have even less affection for Batman than their dad (we didn’t think that was possible!). What does this intriguing sequence have to do with “The Joker War”? Is it really happening, or just a side effect of Punchline’s poison? You’ll need to read the full issue for answers to those questions, but you can meet the Freeze family and get a glimpse at Gotham’s future right now by checking out our exclusive sneak peek!

Batman #96 by James Tynion IV, Jorge Jimenez and Tomeu Morey is in stores and available digitally on Tuesday, August 4.
