Director Todd Phillips shared the first official poster for his upcoming Joker movie this morning, and as fans have been pointing out…it’s surprisingly serious. Check it out.

Directed by Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, Joker is said to be a more adult take on the character that presents a new vision of his origin set outside the interconnected DC Extended Universe of Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam!. In what little we’ve seen of it, including this poster, Joker seems to take its inspiration from classic character dramas of the 1970s and 1980s like Taxi Driver, Dog Day Afternoon and The King of Comedy. But this is all fairly speculative because we don’t know much about the plot and have only seen a few intriguing character images prior to now.

However, that’s about to change. Warner Bros. has also launched the official Joker Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts, so make sure you like or follow them for all the latest. Best of all, Phillips also revealed that the movie’s teaser trailer will debut tomorrow, giving us our biggest taste yet of this uniquely different DC movie.

Joker is scheduled to open on October 4th this year, and along with Phoenix stars Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Shea Whigham, Frances Conroy, Bill Camp and Glenn Fleshler. Be sure to drop by tomorrow for a look at the teaser, and in the meantime, let us know what you think of this first poster!
