Color concept art by Peter Nguyen
BATMAN: ARKHAM UNHINGED #23 is the start of “Vicki in Wonderland,” a new story arc by Derek Fridolfs that features Vicki Vale, the Mad Hatter and enough clever Lewis Carroll references to make you grin like a cat.
As our new tale begins, Jervis Tetch and that hat of his are taking Arkham City through the looking glass, and in the process are providing a few of its more noteworthy female residents with some very “curious” makeovers. It’s not easy bringing the whimsy of Wonderland to the hard streets of Arkham, but to give you an idea of how it was done, we’re offering you a step-by-step look at the creation of two pages illustrated by the sensational new art team of Peter Nguyen, Craig Yeung and Carrie Strachan.
In our era of day and date availability and one-click downloads, it’s sometimes easy to forget that comic book creation takes a whole lot of time. Every page and panel in a new book has undergone a multi-step process that often starts months before publication. Sadly, the vast majority of this early, unfinished art never gets seen outside of the DC editorial office, but today we’re lifting the curtain and showing you two pages in their thumbnailed, penciled and inked infancy, as well as the vividly colored finals.
Batman: Arkham Unhinged #23 won’t be available for download until March 20th, but we invite you to take a trip down the rabbit hole now for a glimpse at its creation…
