Batman is the World’s Greatest Detective. When it’s a bonafide mystery that the heroes of the Justice League are facing, it’s the Dark Knight who gets the call. But what happens when the mystery they’re facing is Batman?

Such is the case in Batman/Superman #12, the latest chapter in the ongoing tale of the DC Universe’s most compelling friendship. Kicking off a new storyline, this issue begins with not one, but two burning questions—who destroyed the Batcave and where the heck are Batman and Superman? It’s never good when two of the world’s most beloved superheroes go missing, and with the Batcave looking like a hurricane might have struck it…well, it’s obvious they’re not having a beach day. Even the world’s worst detective would smell foul play.

Fortunately, Superman and Batman have people far more competent on their case—Kate Kane and John Henry Irons, perhaps better known as Batwoman and Steel. While Kate and John don’t have a history of working together, they’ve both learned extensively from the heroes who are missing, which makes them the ideal pair to figure out what happened to the Dark Knight and Man of Steel. However, what Batwoman, Steel and the other heroes of Gotham and Metropolis discover will unmask an even bigger and more frightening mystery: what does Brainiac have to do with all of this and why is the notoriously calculating super-villain acting so strangely? And even more important, when one of the universe’s most powerful—and deadly—criminal intellects seemingly goes crazy, are any of us safe?

If you’re looking for answers, you’ll have to read Batman/Superman #12. But if you just can’t wait until it lands in stores tomorrow, you can get your first taste of what awaits in in this exclusive first look at the issue.

Batman/Superman #12 by Joshua Williamson, Max Raynor and Alejandro Sanchez is in stores and available digitally on Tuesday, September 22.
