We see no reason to beat around the bush. BLACK CANARY #7 is a visual masterpiece and easily among the best comics we’ve read in recent months. The finale of the series’ initial arc, issue #7 finds Dinah and her band, Black Canary, battling the Quietus, a creature built from the complete absence of sound.  A monstrous behemoth drawn in jagged blots of color, our heroes must fight the creature using the only weapon effective against it—noise. In a multi-page sequence told without any dialog or SFX, Annie Wu masterfully, brilliantly illustrates a skirmish involving all four band members, their former singer Bo Maeve and the mysterious white ninja. For most of the battle, our heroes use their instruments alongside Dinah and Bo’s ear-shattering canary cries, but on one imaginative page, Dinah attempts to take down the creature using her martial arts skill in a sequence which Wu brilliantly illustrates using little more than ink and a broken music staff. It’s a triumphant visual mashup of comic art and music reminding us why Black Canary is pure visual rock and roll.
