Kal-El Gets a New Suit in First Superman & Lois Image

Since making his debut back in the pages of Action Comics #1, Superman has changed his look more than a few times. From his strongman-inspired duds of the Golden Age, to the iconic red-and-blue suit he wore in his first live action screen appearance, to the black-and-silver costume he boasted after returning from the dead, Kal-El is nothing if not fashion forward. So, it’s not surprising that when he returns to the small screen, Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel will be donning a new super-suit.

The CW released the first official image of Hoechlin from their upcoming DCTV series Superman & Lois today. Along with a powerful pose and the iconic globe of the Daily Planet visible in the background, The Man of Steel has made some stylish upgrades to the suit, adding a more streamlined belt, some new textures and an updated, more eye-grabbing version of Superman’s famous glyph.

“I find that the new suit is representative of the show," said Hoechlin. "Just as this suit is unique and set apart from the ones that preceded it, the story we’re telling about Clark/Superman at this point in his life is unique and something we’ve never seen before. I appreciate the opportunity to wear the suit and the responsibility that comes with it. But it’s always interesting when I’m asked how I feel about 'my new suit,' because I’ve always felt that the suit doesn’t belong to me; it belongs to everyone that finds some kind of meaning in that suit, in the symbol on the chest. I just happen to be the one wearing it. I come from the world of baseball and a line of coaches that always preached that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back. Because when you wear that jersey, it represents not only you, but your entire team, and everyone that has ever worn that jersey that came before you. So when I wear the suit, that’s what it means to me. It represents everything that Superman stands for and has stood for, for almost a century now. And I look forward to carrying on that tradition.”

The new Superman suit was designed by Laura Jean Shannon, who recently designed the new Starfire and Red Hood suits for HBO Max's Titans, and built by her Supersuits team in Los Angeles in conjunction with Creative Character Engineering.

“We got Superman into some custom athletic inspired Super-Boots as a 'jumping off point' and focused on a new neckline and cape to maximize the billowing and movement we all love to see in the books and films that have defined this character for generations," shared Shannon. "A streamlined muscle structure and updated paint job combined with some dynamic design lines and a sculpted armored belt all took his established custom fabric into a new direction to solidify the new look for Superman in Superman & Lois.”

Hoechlin’s Superman was first introduced on The CW’s Supergirl and has since returned for several guest appearances, most recently as a part of the network’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, which also introduced Elizabeth Tulloch as Superman’s longtime paramour, Lois Lane. Superman & Lois, which premieres on The CW on February 23, 2021, will bring the two characters center stage, offering fans their first live action Superman series since Smallville went off the air in 2011. The show will take a more domestic approach to the Man of Steel, focusing on Clark and Lois as they move back to Smallville with their two young sons, bringing them back into contact with classic Superman characters like Lana Lang and her family and Lois’s father, General Sam Lane. Superman & Lois will be set in the same shared universe as The CW’s other DC shows, like The Flash, Batwoman and Supergirl.
