Rakish, cunning and possessing a tie to the supernatural world that’s brought them nothing but pain. Sound familiar? Yes, we could be talking about John Constantine, the “hero” of the upcoming NBC series Constantine and the DC and Vertigo comics from which it draws its inspiration. But we could just as easily be referring to Mary “Zed” Martin, the vision-prone artist embodied on the show by actress Angélica Celaya.

The role and casting were announced over the summer, but today we get our first official look at Zed in a new promo and four exclusive images.

For those who are unfamiliar with her, Zed was introduced early on in Vertigo’s classic Hellblazer series and was both a friend and lover to John. She was also a very powerful magic user in her own right, who helped John save his niece Gemma from a cult called the Damnation Army before getting involved with an opposing cult, the Resurrection Crusaders in an attempt to cause the Second Coming.

We won’t go into exactly how Constantine prevented that, but trust us, it’s both twisted and brilliant (and it’s all in the first Hellblazer trade collection, if you’re interested). Judging by the promo, it appears the show will be handling Zed a little differently, though her supernatural power is clearly very much intact.

Fans who are attending New York Comic-Con this weekend will likely learn a lot more about Zed during the Constantine panel on Saturday night. The rest of us will have to wait until the show debuts on October 24, 2014.
