And now for the Vertigo nominees: NEW SERIES Sweet Tooth, by Jeff Lemire. Emotional, raw and horrific. Jeff Lemire is at the top of his game writing and drawing his first ongoing series about a boy with antlers on a post apocalyptic adventure into the devastated American landscape. The Unwritten, by Mike Carey and Peter Gross. “Incredibly fun and ridiculously addictive. . . . For fans of literature (from classics to contemporary). . . . The Unwritten is a roller-coaster ride through a library, weaving famous authors and characters into a tale of mystery that is, at once, oddly familiar yet highly original,” says USA TODAY.COM of the New York Times Bestseller. I couldn’t have said it better myself. CONTINUING SERIES Fables, by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha, Andrew Pepoy et al. Fairytale characters, relationships, good and evil, magic, adventure, and terrific art. Who wouldn’t want to keep reading this every month? The Unwritten, by Mike Carey and Peter Gross. Literature, conspiracy, fantasy and more. Mike and Peter are a fantastic team that keep you hanging on for each new issue. SINGLE ISSUE The Unwritten #5: “How the Whale Became,” by Mike Carey and Peter Gross. Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain and a conspiracy, need I say more? WRITER Bill Willingham, Fables. I may be biased, but Bill is one of the best storytellers around. Culling ideas from fables, nursery rhymes and books both obscure and popular he weaves tales that are humorous, emotional, thought provoking and just plain fun. From war to sibling rivalry to a 3 series crossover, to witches…he’s got plenty more stories to tell. PENCILLER/INKER Michael Kaluta, Madame Xanadu #11–15: “Exodus Noir.” Gorgeous. Danijel Zezelj, Luna Park. Zezelj has a unique look and feel to his art and it is the perfect fit to this magical and gritty tale of a Russian immigrant in Brooklyn. COLORING Dave Stewart, Abe Sapien, BPRD, The Goon, Hellboy, Solomon Kane, Umbrella Academy, Zero Killer (Dark Horse); Detective Comics (DC); Luna Park (Vertigo). Stewart creates palettes that take the reader to visually stunning places, just look how many books this man makes look amazing. Congratulations to all our fabulous talent and nominees! Keep up the great work. I’ll see you in San Diego wearing my lucky shoes!
