Catch some secrets, no time travel required.

Barry travels back in time to get advice from Eobard Thawne/Dr. Wells on how to increase his speed. He wants to use the information to defeat Zoom. Not surprisingly, his straightforward plan doesn't go off without a hitch.  A freaky, nightmare-inducing hitch. A Time Wraith chases Barry, and he gets help from an unexpected ally. In the process, all of these timeline disturbances shake out a few secrets:

  • Withering away
  • Harry Potter who?

Phasing Through the Time Stream

Time Wraiths don't have a history in the comic books, but Barry Allen has been affected by jumping around the time stream. In a famous example, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #8 saw the super hero forced through various points in the time stream as he ran faster than he'd ever run in his life after stopping an antimatter cannon. The phasing caused Barry's body to disintegrate, which is similar to the effect the Wraith had on him in the show before Hartley saved the day.

Casting a Spell

The Time Wraiths bear a little bit of a resemblance to certain guards at the wizarding world prison in Harry Potter. Cisco, with his infinite pop culture knowledge, teases that the beings are like Dementors. When Barry asks him what he's doing at one point, he says, "You know, just trying to figure out how to find this Dementor that's apparently roaming through Central City right now."

The creatures first showed up in the third Harry Potter book, The Prisoner of Azkaban. Was it just us, or did you hear Hartley say "Expecto!" when he took down the Time Wraith?

Race back here next week for secrets from the next episode!
