Just yesterday we reported that the crucial role of Detective James Gordon had been cast in Gotham, Fox's Batman prequel series. Well, today we're back with more casting news, including a certain umbrella-loving villain.

Robin Lord Taylor has been cast in the role of Oswald Cobblepot, who has not yet risen to the top of the Gotham underworld. In Gotham, the eventual Penguin is described as having "the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal." We're also given a hint to his place in the world: "Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor."

Along with one of Batman's iconic enemies, the show's also cast one of his greatest allies. The role of Alfred Pennyworth will be embodied by actor Sean Pertwee. Even more intriguing however, is the description of Alfred the show's provided: "A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne."

Could this version of Alfred play a greater role in Bruce's transformation into Batman? In addition, two other key roles have been cast. Actress Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice) will play the GCPD's Captain Essen, Gordon's boss in the Homicide Unit. But what sort of captain will she be? She's described as balancing "the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop."

Finally, Erin Richards (Breaking In, Being Human) will play the eventual Mrs. Gordon, Barbara Kean. "A sophisticated emergency room doctor, Barbara is the fiancée of James Gordon, joyful but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband…which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham.”

Fans of Frank Miller's acclaimed Batman: Year One, may find the role of Captain Essen to be an eyebrow-raising one. Especially if the writers choose to incorporate Gordon'sYear One history with her into the show. (Is it too early to start feeling bad for Erin RIchards?)

Anyway, after months of speculation, it looks like the Gotham cast is starting to take shape. What do you think?

UPDATED (2/12/14 11 a.m. PST): Add one more to the cast list! News broke this morning that actor Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy) will be playing Detective Gordon's rough-around-the-edges partner Harvey Bullock. As Batman fans know, Bullock is known for playing loose with police procedure, but he gets results… and he does it with old-school, forceful panache.
